Commercializing the Pakistan Drama Industry and Choking the Art

Pakistani drama industry has seen many ups and downs. The late 80s and 90s was the prime time for Pakistani drama industry, turn of the century witnessed the decline of the industry it took a while for a new wave of dramas, which took industry out of the slump.

However, the current situation of the industry can be critically discussed as to where the industry stands today in terms of art and work ethics. A few dramas got hit which are without any doubt the best, but among 40 t.v channels only a few dramas are making it big, it is concerning.

Dramas now are commercializing, to make a series just for the sake of money is choking the art hence are just streamline. The subject of 80% of dramas are domestic which is not bad but the vision to subjects around which dramas are written is narrowed.

Veteran directors and scriptwriters are not happy with the current state of the drama industry as stories of more than half of series airing are similar. Young writers are being told to write scenes, in the end, they are haphazardly patched to produce a show in hope of making it rather than making a quality show. Dramas are being used just to mine money, quality content is not under consideration.

Young writers are not even being credited for their work they sit around to see their name in credits but all the credit is given to the bigger writers. Lack of recognition is playing a vital role in the production of streamline shows.

Now, the dramas are sexist, they have scored audience which is the majority of house-wives. Shows are produced targeting the respective audience and are not fabricated for the whole society. Stories of most of the shows being aired are far from reality. Domestic abuse, Divorce, Betrayal are the chunk of the problems face by individuals in life, But to mass-produce shows just around these chunks is not justified since it is the source of the decline in our drama industry.

The burden of the Drama industry is just on the few shows which are evidently beyond imagination and extraordinary, and are produced in such fashion which manifests the problem and copes the solution or consequences in such elegant way it is deliquesced by wholesome of society.

Life for the people of Pakistan is no doubt hard, It can be ease by little humor. 70% of Pakistan's population is young, one of the youngest in the world, but not a single sid-com or funny show is being aired which can relate to the young generation's problems in an amusing way.

The magical age of teens, the puppy love, the braveness towards life, unreal imaginations- these subjects can be presented in an artful way so that not only young but also matured audiences can relate to, it will also widen the spectrum of thought process of society.

In Pakistan, the survival of art can never be painless, Young individuals in Pakistan lack the resources to produce shows to fill the void in genre, taste, and mindset unlike in the western countries or even in India.

Pakistan has to go long way before autonomously generation gap is filled not only age-wise but also according to mindset and taste.
